October 17, 2003: FERC Dam Safety Inspection at H. Neely Henry Dam in Ohatchee, Al.

Beacon Resources personnel participated in a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) dam safety inspection in order to observe the performance of Beacon-developed Pocket PC-based inspection checklists.  It was an invaluable opportunity to be able to observe how the checklists are utilized by actual FERC personnel under actual field conditions at a dam site.

September 8-11, 2003: Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) Annual Conference in Minneapolis, Mn.

The entire staff of Beacon Resources was in attendance at the ASDSO annual conference providing demonstrations of the Dam Safety Program Management Tools (DSPMT) software and showing State representatives the data that they had contributed to the 2002 NDSRB State Evaluation Criteria report data collection effort in Spring, 2003.  Beacon Resources personnel also had the opportunity to provide presentations on the current status and features of the DSPMT software at the National Inventory of Dams (NID) subcommittee meeting and at the USACE Dam Safety meeting.

July 14-18, 2003: Beacon Resources provided training on using the Dam Safety Program Management Tools software to USACE Districts in Vicksburg, Ms.

Two training classes were provided for DSPMT training.  The first class consisted of 31 participants and the second class had 18 participants including representatives of all of the USACE districts.  Each class was conducted over a 1 and 1/2 day period and featured powerpoint slides followed by live demonstrations and class participation in each capability followed by plenty of discussion, comments, and suggestions for program and interface improvements.

June 21-27, 2003: Installation and Testing of Upgraded Geophysical Surveying Software at Tetra Tech (Foster-Wheeler) in Denver, Co.

What a change from last year!  Last year at this time it was 98+ degrees in Denver, this year the highs were in the lower to mid 70's.  The entire staff of Beacon Resources was on-site installing and testing upgraded real-time data collection software which now interfaces to up to five Geonics EM-61 Mk II geophysical surveying sensors.  The towed sensor array now has the ability of being configured for either EM-61 standard sensors or Mk II sensors.

May 6-8, 2003: Beacon Resources Exhibits at the USACE Infrastructure Conference in Las Vegas, Nv.

The 2003 Corps of Engineers Infrastructure Conference was a tremendous success.  With over 1500 attendees it was a terrific opportunity for exhibiting Beacon's capabilities.

Our River Engineering mascots, the beavers, were a big hit as usual.  The biggest areas of interest were in the handheld computer applications and in the Dam Safety Program Management Tools software.  Beacon's presentation on the Dam Safety Program Management Tools on Thursday was well attended and well received.

January 23, 2003: Major Snowstorm in North Alabama

For Alabama, this was a major snowstorm.  The grass was covered, rooftops were covered, roads were covered.  One of the drawbacks to having a traditional office is that travel to Beacon was impossible, software development was delayed for a day.
